Serum concentrations of six cytokines (interferon gamma (IFNγ ), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα ), interleukin 10 (IL-10), IL-6, IL-4, and IL-2) were investigated in 62 infants with DHF/Dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Significantly elevated IFNγ , TNFα , IL-10, and IL-6 levels were detected in DHF/DSS infants in the acute phase of the disease, whereas, there was not any significant elevation in the concentrations of IL-4 and IL-2 in these patients. Serum IL-6 levels strongly correlated with prothrombin time (PT) (r=0.87, P=0.001), but not correlated with activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) or fibrinogen levels (r=0.53, P=0.1, and r=0.45, P=0.1, respectively), nor with serum levels of transaminases, meanwhile, serum IL-10 levels strongly correlated with serum levels of aspartate aminotransaminase (AST) and alanine aminotransaminase (ALT) (r=0.91, P=0.000, and r=0.91, P=0.000, respectively), but not related with PT, APTT, and fibrinogen levels. These data demonstrate that overproduction of cytokines (IFNγ , TNFα , IL-10, and IL-6) may play a role in the pathogenesis of DHF/DSS in infants.
